Google Street Maps finally hit Aussie shores

Posted on Friday 19 May 2006

Much faster than i expected too.? The US and most of Europe have had it for awhile but google street maps have now hit Australia too.? We have had satellite maps for quite a while but its very difficult to navigate around them without? having the street names.

I can see why they have slipped this out without any promotion however, it doesnt seem like the data is quite searchable yet.? For example, you can’t yet do a search for tullamarine near melbourne - but its obvious that they have the data.

check it out here - http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=minnie+st,+brunswick,+melbourne&ll=-37.769841,144.995263&spn=0.006132,0.008787&t=h&om=1

And what does this mean to us poor deprived antipodeans?? Will google local be very far away?? Will mashups finally become useful and prevalent?? I note that they have railway stations marked already - what will be next?
