Making money from your website

Posted on Thursday 29 December 2005

So, you have read about people making millions of the internet and thought that perhaps its worth a shot, then realised that you don’t know the first thing about selling over the internet, how to make websites or how to program in html? Dont let that stop you!

he,he - what do you think of my sales speil? not real compelling is it? Ok, ill cut the crap. There are a few really simple ways to make some money of the internet - let me hit you with a couple of the simplest. Google adwords and Affiliate programs.

Google Adwords
Google adwords is google’s own advertising program. Here is google’s own explanation:
Google AdSense is a fast and easy way for website publishers of all sizes to display relevant Google ads on their website’s content pages and earn money. Because the ads are related to what your visitors are looking for on your site — or matched to the characteristics and interests of the visitors your content attracts — you’ll finally have a way to both monetize and enhance your content pages.
It’s also a way for website publishers to provide Google web and site search to their visitors, and to earn money by displaying Google ads on the search results pages.

You can easily set up a google adwords account by clicking the image on on the right hand side of this page that says something like ‘Get targeted ads on your site with google adsense’.

How much money can you make with google adwords? Well, here’s the catch, google’s terms and conditions don’t allow anyone to report publicly on how much they make from adwords. However, i can tell you that substantial amounts of effort can generate substantial amounts of relevant traffic that can generate substantial amounts of revenue. Nothing is free after all.

Affiliate programs
There are hundreds of affiliate programs available on the internet. Of course, i am only qualified to tell you about the ones i have tried. The affiliate program that will work for you is going to be relevant to your audience, and paying reasonable commisions. Because of the nature of my audience i have chosen My Template Storage as an affiliate. They sell thousand’s of templates that are look fantastic and are very easy of users to work with. They also have a number of value add services that, depending on your audience, you will be happy to onsell. Check out My Template Storage.

If anyone else can pass on any recommendations about affiliate programs i would happy to have you post them here as comments or in the Australian Search Engine Optimisation Forum.

    Hi Bevan

Just curious to find out how those Adwords work for you at the top of your blog. Are they worth the realestate they occupy or do you needs squillions of visitors to make them pay? Even if they pay beer money each month I guess that would make them worth while!?

    Cheers
    Brett

Hmm, I really should review my articles a little better. i have constantly referred to ‘adsense’ as ‘adwords’ through out, which is just plain wrong! Adsense is what allows web site owners to display google adwords.

Anyway, enough of the semantics. Google adsense terms of service dont allow me to disclose how much i make from adsense. I can talk in more general terms however - the amount you will make per click through is hugely variable depending on the content of your site and therefore the content of the ad and its CPC (cost per click). A 1% click through rate is achievable, as is $0.50 a click. So, if you serve 1000 pages a day, there is a pretty good chance you will make enough to buy yourself a bottle of Asahi or other decent beer at a reasonably priced bar.
